The course has also hugely benefited from some very valuable input from my teacher Roopa Panesar (the UK’s leading sitarist) and I am deeply grateful to her for this. She hand picked all of the compositions from her repertoire especially for the course and really helped me to define the structural details of a whole recital. This performance structure has shaped the way that all of the material is presented. This has been so vital because there is such a significance on context in Indian Classical music.
In order to create form and focus to its improvised nature, you must have a way of navigating through the music and putting ideas into a clear progression, that will result in a complete musical statement. That is how a recital can last easily up to an hour, using just the one raag and keep sounding fresh and full of new ideas all the way through. This is what we will achieve by the end of this course.
Also thank you to sitarist Shakir Parvez Khan who has also been helping me recently to develop my playing and musical concepts. I feel his influence really inspired some of the stylistic elements I am cultivating here.
Finally thank you to Donough Sanfay my first sitar teacher, who sadly passed away in March 2019. He put me on this path and I have him to thank for all that comes from it.
It has been created for guitarists who already have some playing experience - not necessarily in Indian music. However it is also very suitable for beginners, as the concepts and techniques are taught in a very clear way and the earlier chapters contain basic exercises that are easily understood.
The course moves systematically through an entire recital of Raag Kafi and breaks down the techniques and theory concepts that are key to each stage of a performance. One of the aims is to give you a good grounding in each core area of the music. This will grant you a strong foundation and the real technical bearings with the guitar to make this style possible on the instrument.
The material contains very specially crafted exercises and points of focus, that provide the right tools and practice concepts that will really nourish the roots of your playing. As the elements are broken down into easily digestible parts, there is a pleasing simplicity to it. But when all the elements are fully absorbed and used as a vehicle for improvisation, you will see the true potential of the ideas being expressed and taught here.
